Another Kentucky bourbon whiskey line has been acquired by a larger international company. TheDeutsch Family Wine & Spirits company, which operates nationally out of White Plains, N.Y., recently purchased the Redemption Whiskey portfolio fromBardstown Barrel Selections.

The line includes Redemption Straight Rye Whiskey, Redemption High Rye Bourbon, Redemption Bourbon, Riverboat Rye, White Whiskey and Limited Edition Barrel Selections. Redemption is distilled at the Lawrenceburg Distillers in Indiana and bottled in small batches in Bardstown, Ky., with each batch and bottle number hand written on every label.

The purchase signifies the Deutsch Family’s commitment to the spirits business and is the first whiskey in the company’s portfolio, which includes mostly international wines, most notably Australia’s popular Yellow Tail line.

The company was founded in 1981 by Chairman Bill Deutsch to market wines produced by prestigious families from major wine regions of the world. In 2009, it expanded to include a spirits portfolio.

Bardstown Barrel Selections, the parent company of Redemption, was founded by bourbon industry veterans Michael Kanbar and Dave Schmier.

“Six years ago we entered the spirits business after almost three decades as a wine company, and we have been very selective about what brands we brought into our portfolio. The addition of Redemption provides a high-quality entry into the most dynamic segment of the spirits business: American Whiskey,” Peter Deutsch, CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, said in a press release. “The premium and ultra-premium segments within the whiskey category remind me a lot of premium wine, with consumers being open to experiment, focused more on quality than slick marketing and interested in learning more about the product itself.”

Kanbar and Schemer will work with the Deutsch company for an undisclosed amount of time to help the team and distribution partners understand the brand.

“We are very excited to see what Redemption can achieve in the future under the stewardship of the Deutsch Family,” said Kanbar in the press release. “We know the brand is in good hands and that they will build on the strong foundation we created.”

The amount Redemption was sold for was not disclosed.
